چکیده

Abstract The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft spent more than 2 yr characterizing near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu. OSIRIS-REx Laser Altimeter (OLA) was responsible for producing the most accurate reconstruction of asteroid’s surface—down to a global resolution around 5 cm with data precision ±1.25 cm. However, best-quality OLA digital terrain model (DTM), version 21 (v21), not available navigation during proximity operations, nor utility this evaluated processing images altimeter navigation. focus paper is post-flight assessment final v21 DTM, its performance navigation-related analysis, estimates corrections needed DTM measurement models. We created 15 maplets optical (OpNav) data, DTMs estimate combined trajectory over five phases mission. Our estimated instrument produce residuals 7.12 (1 σ ; one standard deviation from mean). OpNav image at 0.2 px ) landmark locations ±6 cm, outperforming requirements. Finally, our scale precise within 1.1 previously reported values. find that slight discrepancy persists between suggesting too small by 0.049%, but nevertheless exceptional

Surface thermophysical properties determination of OSIRIS-REx target asteroid (101955) Bennu

In this work, we investigate the thermophysical properties of OSIRIS-REx target asteroid (101955) Bennu (hereafter Bennu), where thermal inertia plays an important role in understanding the nature of the asteroid’s surface, and will definitely provide substantial information for the sampling return mission. Using a thermophysical model incorporating, the recently updated 3D radar-derived shape ...

A collision avoidance strategy for a potential natural satellite around the asteroid Bennu for the OSIRIS-REx mission

The cadence of proximity operations for the OSIRIS-REx mission may have an extra induced challenge given the potential of the detection of a natural satellite orbiting the asteroid Bennu. Current ground radar observations for object detection orbiting Bennu show no found objects within bounds of specific size and rotation rates. If a natural satellite is detected during approach, a different pr...

Shape model and surface properties of the OSIRIS-REx target Asteroid (101955) Bennu from radar and lightcurve observations

We determine the three-dimensional shape of near-Earth Asteroid (101955) Bennu based on radar images and optical lightcurves. Bennu was observed both in 1999 at its discovery apparition, and in 2005 using the 12.6-cm radar at the Arecibo Observatory and the 3.5-cm radar at the Goldstone tracking station. Data obtained in both apparitions were used to construct a shape model of this object. Obse...
